Earth Hour, conceived and organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
EJ's housemates participated too.
This year, EJ was on the road that day and so did not take any photos.
The following pictures were taken last year.
When the lights were switched off, candles were lit.
Curious and busybodies as cats are, they checked out the candles that resulted in hot noses and singed whiskers.
Cinders checking out the candle and licking her hot nose to cool off.

It was only after the lights were switched on that EJ discovered the cats' whiskers were singed with ends blunt and curled.

I am glad it was just the whiskers. I had a cat once that jumped in the fireplace and his tail was singed.

Heheheeheheh - I can imagine ..
Happened to ONION girl when I celebrated their birthdays with candles on snappy tom's canned food .. ONION whiskers were so burnt, including her "brow" - she ignored me the whole week!
Awwww, curious cat singed off the whiskers.
That happens to Luna once too. Unfortunately they grow back very slowly and she looks funny for longer.
Your pictures are very beautiful (even from last year, lol) I completely missed this event ! My cats never approach a candle or the open fire, I think they are afraid.
We switch everything off all the time anyway so for us it made no difference. I can't remember: is switching off fluorescent lights for an hour useful or not?
We're back online but at a new space: http://blog.lepak.com. Can you change your bookmarks for us? See you soon.
These pictures are cute how the kitties approached the candles. Our cat Pickles had singed a good part of his tail fur just from having it sit in a candle flame and not realize. When we smelled that burnt hair smell, we knew something wasn't right.
Poor kitties, it will be an adjustment for them until their whiskers slowly grow back..Hope the week is better for you all!...xo...Calle,Halle,Sukki
Oh, dear!!!!!!!! Whiskers are so important. xxxxxxxxx
Oh dear sorry the whiskeers got singed..I do though love the pictures.. LOvely.. HUgs GJ xx
Curious kitties :)
Photos looks very beautiful and mysterious!
My cats would have done the same thing.
I realized with 5 cats I needed something beyond candles in case of emergency, so I found some very small battery operated camping lamps. They have come in handy and are plastic so even if the cats push them over nothing will be harmed. I was so afraid with a flame of any sort that one of them would get hurt...

We took part in that too. But we didn't use candles, just sat in the dark for a while. It was kind of fun. Hope you have a great day Chair.
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing about your participation in Earth Hour! Such curious kitties ... glad the only casualties were some singed whiskers.
Poor nosy kitties! My cat, Sassie, likes to lie on the heater. Sometimes it results in a burnt tale.
Aawwwwwww poor kitties, it happened
