Tortie's Chronic Kidney Disease and Live Strong

His blood test confirmed that he has Chronic Kidney Disease with urea four times and creatinine six times above the range. This is not all; Tortie also has high cholesterol which put him on cardiac risk.

All the medicine given by his vet was vomited out on reaching home. He turns up his nose to tiny morsels of tuna and chicken chunks which EJ meticulously and careful embedded the pills. He did not want to eat even when EJ tried psychologically to encourage him by placing all his other roommates who greedily lapped up their fish soup in front of him one by one. (EJ is feeling nauseating due to meat allergic but is gritting the teeth going at it).

Earlier EJ tried syringing the medicine; it did not work well. Look at that angry face and the mess.

Tortie is very uncooperative as you can see that stubborn streak in that chin.

These are the medicine for now. More will have to be taken later.

The fluid therapy did not go on well. Tortie would just get up and walk off a short while after everything was going fine. But how many times can you poke a needle in a cat in a within a period of time? This is when EJ wish to have more than a pair of hands. EJ also tried using legs but it did not go well due to knee pain.

Both Tortie and EJ will have to keep on battling. Read about Tortie's first battle in his life here. EJ has not blog about Tortie's late brother 4head who had cardiomyopathy and will soon.

LIVESTRONG Day is going yellow in honour and memory of those who battled cancer.

This picture was taken in 1983. Strayed into our lives a few years before when he was a kitten and was so named Kuning meaning yellow in our country due to the yellow fur. That floor mat acted as companion and surrogate mom when he was young.

EJ's father passed away from lung cancer. EJ's maternal aunt fought valiantly, survived cancer of the breast and womb and lived to the ripe old age of 97.

Oh no! Oh Tortie!! You must be so worried, EJ!! Unfortunately kitties have a sixth sense about medication in whatever form no matter how cleverly you hide them - it's just one of those battles we do as kitty owners whenever the kitties need meds. But Tortie's illness is pretty serious and we - me and Charlie are so sorry.

When my ol'girl and her brother were in their throes of cancer and needed xyz meds I had to keep asking the vets to help me. I made myself such a nuisance to them but they had the expertise of shoving the pills down the kitties throats so quickly. I couldn't do this by myself.

I hope you get help or manage to pill kitty. I think beautiful Tortie is just annoyed and fed up at all the attention that he doesn't want or understand. He is a beautiful determined and brave kitty - he has that wonderful chin of determination and stubbornness! Me and Charlie wish you all the best with Tortie. We are sending him tons of purrs!

We are truly sorry about the loss of your dad! How awful for you and your family.

Your aunt is a true warrior woman!! We salute and honour her too.

Take care EJ and hugs again to Tortie! x

So many great folks and animal have had to deal with cancer. Thanks for your post today. Our Chica has Kidney Failure - I dissolve her meds in milk and give them in a plastic needle less syringe in her mouth. I also give her water several times a day this way - she does not like the fluid needle either. Good luck and do ask for help from you vet or other animal lovers.

Tortie is like every cat I have ever had - the only way I can get tablets down is to grind them up and mix in strong flavoured food but that is no good if he won't eat at all.
(I was given a pill gun by my vet who said it was "foolproof" but I must be a fool and I had proof that kittie won!!).

It really is very hard to give medicine to a cat by yourself. I know because I have had to do it for a long time now. Hope you can figure out a way to get the medicine down Tortie. We will keep our paws crossed and send lots of purrs to you and Tortie. If you can get the fluids in him, he should be all right for a long time.
Take care and good luck.

My heart goes out to you and Tortie. There is a fine line between healing, treating and honoring a loved one's destiny. It's so hard to know when (but you will) the time when a pet's quality of life is compromised while trying to save it. The symptoms and protocol are way to familiar to me with Coco's recent passing. Hugs to all.

EJ,
Thanks so much for reading about Bucky. Yes, he was very good. Also, it helps immensely that I have my husband to help. If you can put a nail up high in the wall somewhere, you could hang the bag (the higher it is, the faster the fluid will flow) and use both hands on Tortie. Also, the size and type of needle make a big difference

I wonder if the medicine is antibiotics. Simba just recently had to be on antibiotics for a urine infection. They made him feel so lousy. He didn't want to eat and he was having diarrhea. It was terrible. He was much sicker from then than the kidney disease. Do you have Pill Pockets there? They are wonderful treats (Lucy loves them) that hide pills quite well. You can also order them on the Internet.

If Tortie has any kind of heart problems, it makes treating the kidneys a lot more difficult. Giving lots of fluids can be very bad (I learned this the very hard and painful way with Bucky and can elaborate later).

The best thing that helped me was this web site: http://www.felinecrf.com/. They also have a message board that is super helpful and supportive.

Kuning looks so sweet. I'm sorry to hear about your father, but so glad to hear you aunt was a survivor.

What a very difficult time for you. Cats are so hard to treat and just when you think they have swallowed a pill you later find it on the floor. Stay strong my friend.

Poor Tortie, I know how difficult (or sometimes even imposible) to put a pill into a cat ! Kidney problems are really all cats problems too. I didn't know about this "Livestrong" campaign, it's a very good initiative.

Oh my, I don't envy you one bit. I so wish you live near me so I can help. It's going to be extraordinarily difficult. Maybe you could feed the pills in instalments? That's what I did with Blackie. Catch him by surprise, tilt his head back and when the mouth drops open a bit, quickly shove one pill in and hold the jaws shut tight. If the pills are small, try to shove 2 in quickly at a time. It doesn't matter if it takes you a few hours (of instalment feeding) to finish the first round of medicine (if it's to be fed more than once a day), at least you get them in. Good luck, and Blackie and Yin send lots of positive vibes, purrs and headbutts to Tortie.
